Excelsior - Excelsiorwerke Cöln (EWC)

EWC were possibly the largest cylinder phonograph manufacturer in Germany. They were based in Cologne. EWC produced phonographs not only under their own name, but also manufactured for other companies, such as UK Lambert.

Some of the earlier models were quite unique, though the bulk of the later models were somewhat Graphophone type Q clones, though with the motor copmpletely enclosed in a metal casing. Typical for EWC Q type modely is their black finish with red and gold coloured lining.

Probably the most decorative transfer on a case for any phonograph. This fancy Art Nouveau transfer, makes it, and the 1902 model extremely distinguishable from other phonographs. The 1900 model had a 3 spoked mandrel, and the phonograph played 2 minute cylinders.

On the lower transfer is written "Modell 1900*

Almost identical to the Modell 1900, except that the mandrel was no longer 3 spoked, but the more usual metal cylinder.

Interestingly designed machine with the mandrel recessed into the case, with the main workings of the motor to the right of the mandrel, under the base plate.

The winding handle is oddly positioned so that it needs to be out of the way for the cylinder to be added or removed.
